Maryland reached out to a notable transfer and made the cut for a top-50 rising senior on Saturday. The Terps are on a long list of schools contacting Indiana transfer Justin Smith and made the top 10 for New Jersey forward Trey Patterson.
Smith, a productive 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward, announced on Friday he’s leaving Indiana for his senior year. As a graduate transfer, he’ll be eligible to play immediately next season, making him an attractive option after averaging 10.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in more than 30 minutes per game last year for the Hoosiers. An athletic, physical forward, he’s leaving Bloomington just as Archie Miller’s putting together his best roster since arriving in 2017.
“Justin Smith and I had a conversation recently where we discussed his future, the feedback from the NBA and he has made the decision to graduate and transfer for his final season of eligibility,” head coach Miller said in a statement. “I support his decision and wish Justin and his family all the best in the next chapter. I’m proud of his growth as a person. He’s a great young man and has been a terrific role model off the court and in the classroom.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, Maryland joins a number of high-major programs contacting the Buffalo Grove, Ill., native, along with Illinois, Purdue, Iowa State, Oregon, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Arizona State and others. The bouncy Smith scored in double figures 15 times last season, shooting a healthy 49.2 percent from the floor. But he doesn’t address Maryland’s need for a center or, a as a career 25 percent 3-point shooter, more outside shooting.
Mark Turgeon has two scholarships with which to shop in a drying transfer market, but more names will emerge and he’s also working on a couple of blue-chip 2021 high school prospects who could reclassify.

On Saturday Maryland also made the list for Patterson, the No. 9 small forward and No. 35 player in the 2021 Composite rankings, along with: Memphis, UConn, Florida, Villanova, Indiana, Tennessee, Rutgers, Auburn and Arkansas.
Patterson attends Rutgers Prep in Somerset, N.J., but all four Crystal Ball picks have him slated for Villanova. He’s on a fast-growing list of shooting guards and small forwards.
“I’ve had Zoom calls with a bunch of schools: Memphis, Florida, Indiana, Villanova, UConn, Tennessee, Maryland. Rutgers and Arkansas also called me. Those are pretty much the main schools that have been contacting me,” Patterson told Inside Indiana‘s Jeff Rabjohns on Friday.
His 247Sports Scouting Report:
“Has an athletic build, but just average size for a combo forward. Is a run-and-jump athlete more than a lateral or explosive athlete. Shoots the ball well to behind the arc, but has a slow release at this point. Can attack the rim going right and is a pull-up shooter going left. Has good body control around the rim and can finish with either hand. Comfortable posting up. Ball handling and passing have room for improvement. Versatile defender but not a high-impact defender.”
